A big difference between typical consumer electronics and a PC is the boot time. Normally when you turn on a PC it takes a few minutes to boot. Not anymore. Computer manufacturers are now using specialized chips which allow the computer to fully boot into an OS with internet and web browsing within a few seconds.

Hackers have already been able to modify this instant-on OS to include their own software and to boot off USB flash drives.

It would be interesting to use this technology on some small single purpose linux CPU's to do various jobs with home automation.
